Praise by Music

Well, I may as well be upfront. I am in love: with St. Martin’s Church and School; with my wife; and with the birthday present my wife gave me this year. I have a brand new guitar! Most of you probably don’t know that I have played (modestly) off and on since I was eight, mainly folky stuff and influenced by Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, the Kingston Trio, and many others. My father taught me the basics and they gave me the guitars I still own. This new one is something I have always wanted – not a replacement but a different type, and thanks to the generosity of my beloved it is now mine.

I ran across a verse in Isaiah: The LORD will save me, and we will sing with stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the temple of the LORD (Isaiah 38:20). Great quote, isn’t it. For me it has special significance because it brings together the greatest joys of my life in one placed, The Lord’s House, singing and guitars – well yes I know they didn’t have guitars per se in those days, but the would have if they could have!

This is the month of Thanksgiving for our nation. Despite hard times we have much to be grateful for. And thanksgivings are one of the primary types of prayer we are commended to make. If we would thank God more I suspect we would find ourselves less burdened. Still, the greatest form of prayer isn’t thanksgiving, nor petition (for ourselves), nor intercessions (for others), as important as they all are. The ultimate calling we have from God is praise. Praise if joy; praise is being overwhelmed in love; praise is the state we will be in heaven to come. I truly believe we will be there with guitars as well as our voices.
